With less than a week until Election Day in the 2026 midterm elections, political campaigns are ramping up their advertising efforts, using digital technology and artificial intelligence in ways that are reshaping how candidates reach voters. The final stretch of the cycle has seen a sharp increase in spending across streaming platforms, social media and connected television, as campaigns try to meet voters where they already spend their time.
Consultants say the biggest shift this year is the use of AI tools to produce and test ads at a speed that was not possible in previous cycles. Campaigns are generating multiple versions of the same message, each tailored to different audiences, and running quick tests to see which performs best. The approach allows smaller races to compete with better-funded opponents, though it also raises concerns about accuracy and disclosure.
Digital outreach has expanded beyond traditional banner ads. Campaigns are experimenting with interactive formats, including short video spots built for mobile feeds and audio ads inserted into streaming music and podcasts. Some operations are using data to time messages around local events, weather and even commuting patterns.
Watchdog groups continue to call for clear labeling of AI-generated content, warning that realistic synthetic voices and images could confuse voters in the final days. Several states have passed rules requiring disclosure, but enforcement remains uneven. Campaign managers counter that their tools are used mainly for editing and translation, not deception.
With turnout expected to be close in several districts, the last week of advertising could prove decisive. Both parties are pouring money into get-out-the-vote messages, and the tools they deploy now will likely set the standard for cycles to come.
