HONOLULU - A new piece of technology aimed at helping Hawaii communities tackle wastewater treatment, cut the cost of cesspool conversions, and keep communication lines open during emergencies got its first public showing on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The event, organized by Team Honu with support from the National Science Foundation, centered on a device called the "Honu Hub." The compact unit is designed to be a flexible solution for areas that have struggled with outdated septic systems or lack reliable utility infrastructure.
What makes the Honu Hub stand out is its ability to treat wastewater on-site without needing a massive centralized plant. That could be a game changer for rural neighborhoods and properties that are currently relying on cesspools, which are being phased out across the state due to environmental concerns. The system is built to be affordable, which addresses one of the biggest hurdles homeowners face when forced to upgrade.
Beyond wastewater, the hub also includes a backup power and connectivity feature. In the event of a storm or grid failure, it can keep local communication networks running, which is critical for first responders and residents alike. The project is still in its testing phase, but the team behind it hopes to deploy the hubs in multiple communities over the next few years.
