Egypt explores specialised fund to boost biotechnology, health technology investment

Egypt is looking into setting up a dedicated investment fund focused on biotechnology and medical technology, according to the Ministry of Health and Population. The move is part of a wider push to draw in more investment, back local innovation, and upgrade healthcare services across the country.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar recently met with officials from Gold Rock Venture at the ministry's headquarters in New Alamein to discuss the proposal. The talks centered on how such a fund could be structured and what it would take to get it off the ground.

The ministry said the fund would aim to support Egyptian startups and researchers working in areas like diagnostics, drug development, and medical devices. It would also help bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial use, which has been a weak point in the local health sector for years.

Abdel Ghaffar stressed that the government sees health technology as a priority sector. He pointed to the need for stronger partnerships between public institutions and private investors to make sure new ideas actually reach patients and hospitals.

No timeline was given for when the fund might be launched, but the ministry described the meeting as a productive first step. More discussions are expected in the coming months with other potential partners and stakeholders.

The push comes as Egypt tries to position itself as a regional hub for health innovation, with several new hospitals and research centers planned or under construction.
