A retirement community in Lancaster County has reached a milestone that many in elder care consider nearly impossible: an entire month with zero resident falls. United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz achieved the feat in April, and officials say the key was a new artificial intelligence system installed earlier this year.
The technology uses ceiling-mounted sensors to monitor residents' movements without cameras or microphones. When the system detects unusual motion, such as a sudden shift in balance or an attempt to get out of bed unsteadily, it sends an alert to staff within seconds. This allows caregivers to reach the resident before a fall happens.
Before the AI system was installed, United Zion reported an average of 10 to 15 falls per month. The community had tried traditional methods like bed alarms and hourly checks, but those often failed to prevent accidents. The new system, by contrast, predicts risk in real time.
"We went from reacting to falls to preventing them," said a spokesperson for the facility. "The technology doesn't replace human care, but it gives our staff a crucial head start."
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and nursing homes across the country struggle to reduce them. United Zion's success in April has drawn attention from other retirement communities looking for similar solutions. The facility plans to continue using the AI system and hopes to repeat the zero-fall result in coming months.
