Craig Rowe, an aircraft mechanic at MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Flight Test Facility, has been named a recipient of a 2026 MIT Excellence Award. The recognition comes after seven years of work leading a major modification program on the laboratory's Gulfstream IV aircraft.
Rowe serves as lead crew chief of the Gulfstream IV, a role that placed him at the center of an extensive effort to upgrade the aircraft's systems and airframe. The project spanned nearly a decade and required coordination across engineering teams, maintenance crews, and flight operations staff. According to the laboratory, Rowe's oversight was central to keeping the modification on schedule while maintaining strict safety and airworthiness standards.
The MIT Excellence Awards honor staff members whose contributions go beyond routine expectations and whose work strengthens the institute's mission. Rowe's selection highlights the often unseen labor that supports research flying, where reliable aircraft and meticulous maintenance underpin every mission.
Colleagues describe Rowe as a steady presence who combines technical skill with a hands-on approach to leadership. His work on the Gulfstream IV has positioned the Flight Test Facility to continue supporting a range of airborne research programs in the years ahead.
