The technology lab at Sevierville Intermediate School has received a major overhaul after the school was awarded a $27,500 prize by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The funding allowed the school to purchase new equipment, including robots, virtual reality headsets, and 3D printers, giving students access to hands-on learning tools that were not previously available.
School officials said the upgrade is meant to bring more practical, career-focused experiences into the classroom. Students can now work with robotics kits to learn basic programming and problem solving, use VR headsets to explore immersive lessons, and design and print their own projects on the new 3D printers. Teachers noted that the equipment gives students a chance to experiment and build skills that connect directly to science, technology, engineering, and math fields.
The prize came through a competitive process, and the school was selected for its plan to expand technology education. Staff members said the new tools will be integrated into daily lessons across multiple grade levels rather than limited to a single class. The lab is expected to become a central hub for project-based learning, where students can collaborate on design challenges and test their ideas in real time.
Administrators described the makeover as a significant step forward for the school and said the response from students has been enthusiastic. The new equipment is already in use, and the school plans to continue developing its technology curriculum around the upgraded lab.
