RUSSELLVILLE -- A new training resource is set to debut at the 2026 Arkansas River Valley Wildland Fire Academy, giving government agency personnel and Arkansas Tech University students a modern tool for learning how to manage wildfires in the Natural State. The technology, integrated directly into the academy's curriculum, aims to improve how trainees understand fire behavior and response tactics.
The academy, which brings together local, state, and federal firefighting agencies alongside academic participants, will use the system to simulate real-world wildfire scenarios. This hands-on approach helps students and professionals practice decision-making in a controlled environment before facing actual blazes. Organizers say the tool allows for more realistic training without the risks of live fire exercises.
Arkansas faces increasing wildfire threats due to dry conditions and changing weather patterns. The new technology addresses this by teaching modern suppression techniques and safety protocols. It also reinforces the importance of interagency cooperation, a key factor in managing large-scale fires. Participants will work through exercises that mimic challenges like shifting winds, rough terrain, and limited water sources.
The academy runs annually and serves as a critical training hub for the region. By adding this resource, officials hope to better prepare the next generation of wildland firefighters. The 2026 session will mark the first time the technology is used in the curriculum, with plans to expand its role in future years.
