Reston space technology company expands to Merrifield

A Reston-based company specializing in satellite technology has chosen Merrifield for its latest growth move. Scout Space will open a new 2,650-square-foot manufacturing facility in the industrial zone south of the Dunn Loring Metro station. The company will keep its existing headquarters at the Summit office buildings on Edmund Halley Drive in Reston.

The expansion shifts some of the firm's production work into a dedicated space designed for building and testing hardware. The Merrifield location offers a more practical layout for hands-on manufacturing compared to the traditional office setting of the current headquarters. Company leaders said the move allows them to scale up production of key components used in small satellites and orbital systems.

The new facility is expected to support a growing team of engineers and technicians focused on in-space sensing and safety technology. Scout Space develops systems that help satellites detect and avoid collisions, a growing concern as more private and government spacecraft enter orbit. The Merrifield site will also handle assembly and integration work that previously had to be outsourced or squeezed into shared office space.

Local economic development officials welcomed the expansion as a sign of continued strength in the region's aerospace sector. The area around the Dunn Loring Metro has seen a gradual shift from older industrial uses toward tech and light manufacturing. Scout Space plans to have the Merrifield facility operational in the coming months.
