Scranton aims to seek $750,000 in grants for police technology, recruitment

The city of Scranton is moving forward with a plan to apply for $750,000 in combined federal and state grant funding, with the money earmarked for police department technology upgrades as well as efforts to recruit, retain, and train officers.

City officials outlined the proposal during a recent council meeting, noting that the funds would be split between two main priorities. A significant portion would go toward modernizing equipment and software used by the department, including upgrades to data systems and communication tools. The remaining funds would target the ongoing challenge of staffing shortages, supporting initiatives to attract new recruits and keep experienced officers on the force.

Council members expressed support for the application, acknowledging that the police department has faced difficulty competing for talent in a tight labor market. The grants would also allow for expanded training programs, which officials say are critical for both new hires and veteran personnel.

The city plans to submit the applications within the coming weeks. If approved, the money would provide a financial boost without tapping into local tax revenue. Scranton has pursued similar grant opportunities in the past, but this request is notably larger in scope, reflecting the growing pressure on small-city police departments to modernize while maintaining adequate staffing levels.
