Some students jeered AI at college graduations. But it’s the elephant in the classroom.

Some students jeered AI at college graduations. But it’s the elephant in the classroom.

This spring, a handful of college graduation speakers faced an awkward moment: the crowd booed when they brought up artificial intelligence. The jeers might suggest a campus-wide rejection of the technology, but the reality on the ground is far more complicated. While students may groan at the mention of AI in a commencement speech, universities are quietly making it the centerpiece of their academic future.

The tension is real. Many students worry that AI tools will devalue their degrees or replace entry-level jobs. They see the hype as a threat, not an opportunity. Yet administrators and faculty see a different picture. Applications for computer science and data science programs are soaring, and schools that ignore AI risk looking outdated. As a result, dozens of colleges have announced new majors, minors, and certificates focused on machine learning, prompt engineering, and AI ethics.

Some institutions are embedding AI across the curriculum, from business to nursing. Others are building dedicated research centers. The push is not just about keeping up with Silicon Valley. It is about preparing students for a workforce where knowing how to work with AI might be as basic as knowing how to use a spreadsheet.

The irony is not lost on campus observers. The same students who booed the speaker may soon be signing up for the new AI track. For now, the technology remains the elephant in the classroom -- unwelcome at the podium but unavoidable in the syllabus.
