SunTrax campus expands to include air technology

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis paid a visit to SunTrax on Monday, marking the official expansion of the facility's focus beyond ground-based transportation. The campus, already known as the state's top hub for testing connected and autonomous vehicles, is now adding a dedicated air technology component. This move positions SunTrax to support the development of drones, air taxis, and other vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The new air technology segment will allow researchers and private companies to test unmanned aerial systems in a controlled environment. That includes everything from package delivery drones to larger passenger-carrying vehicles that could one day shuttle people between cities. The facility's existing infrastructure, which includes a massive test track and advanced simulation tools, will now be paired with airspace management systems and landing pads designed for these new aircraft.

Governor DeSantis highlighted the expansion as a win for Florida's economy and its reputation as a leader in transportation innovation. He noted that the state is committed to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to emerging technologies. The addition of air tech is expected to attract new businesses and high-skilled jobs to the region, building on SunTrax's track record of drawing interest from automakers, tech startups, and government agencies.

The campus is part of a broader effort to create a seamless transportation network that includes roads, rail, and now the sky. While the air technology program is still in its early stages, officials say the infrastructure is ready for immediate use. Companies interested in testing their aerial systems can apply for time at the facility, which is designed to handle everything from small hobbyist-grade drones to full-scale commercial aircraft prototypes.
