The Turlock Fire Department has switched on a new digital alerting system meant to give drivers a heads up before they encounter emergency vehicles on the road. The technology, built by HAAS Alert and called Safety Cloud, works in tandem with the usual lights and sirens to send real-time notifications straight to compatible vehicles and navigation apps.
When a fire truck or ambulance is responding to a call or parked at a scene, the system broadcasts its location and status digitally. That means drivers with connected cars or certain mobile apps can see a warning on their dashboard or screen well before they would hear a siren or spot flashing lights in a mirror. The goal is to reduce surprise encounters, cut down on last-second swerves, and make the roadway safer for both responders and the public.
Fire officials say the extra layer of warning is especially useful in heavy traffic, at intersections, and on highways where sound and visibility can be limited. The department is one of the latest agencies to adopt the service, which has been spreading through fire and police departments across the country. While the system does not replace traditional warning methods, it adds a digital buffer that gives motorists more time to react and move over. The department hopes the change will lead to fewer close calls and a smoother flow of traffic around emergency scenes.
