Amazon founder Jeff Bezos offered a surprising take on artificial intelligence this week, suggesting the technology will lead to a shortage of workers rather than mass unemployment. Speaking on Wednesday, Bezos responded to a question from former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino about AI's impact on jobs.
Bezos argued that as AI takes over repetitive and mundane tasks, it will free up humans to focus on more complex and creative work. This shift, he believes, will actually increase the demand for human labor in new areas. He pointed to historical examples where technological advances, such as the rise of the internet, created entirely new industries and job categories that no one could have predicted.
The billionaire entrepreneur acknowledged that the transition will not be seamless. Some workers will need to reskill, and companies will have to invest in training programs. However, he stressed that the long-term outlook is positive. Instead of a future where machines replace people, Bezos envisions one where humans are needed more than ever to manage, improve, and innovate alongside AI systems.
His comments push back against a common fear that artificial intelligence will render millions of jobs obsolete. While some experts warn of significant disruption, Bezos remains confident that human ingenuity and adaptability will keep labor markets tight.
