Advancements in technology are helping scammers become more sophisticated, making fraud harder to spot and harder to stop, according to consumer protection officials in New York. The warning comes as reports of digital deception rise across all age groups, not just the elderly.
Scammers now use artificial intelligence to clone voices, generate realistic fake documents, and craft convincing phishing emails that mimic trusted institutions. They also exploit social media data to personalize their attacks, making victims more likely to fall for them. One official noted that even tech-savvy young adults are being caught off guard by deepfake video calls and fake job offers.
The most common schemes include fake tech support calls, romance scams, and impersonation of government agencies. Criminals often demand payment in cryptocurrency or gift cards, which are nearly impossible to trace. In some cases, victims are told to withdraw cash and hand it to a courier.
Authorities urge people to slow down and verify any unsolicited request for money or personal information. Hanging up and calling the official number of a company or agency is one simple step. They also advise against sharing sensitive data online and recommend using multi-factor authentication on accounts.
As technology evolves, so do the tricks. The best defense, officials say, is skepticism and awareness.
