As the energy landscape evolves, many utilities are still relying on older technologies, particularly 765 kV HVAC lines, for the development of tomorrow's power grid. This reliance on traditional alternating current (AC) systems can be attributed to a combination of technical advantages and longstanding institutional practices that favor established methods over innovative solutions.
Alternating current has been the backbone of the U.S. transmission system for decades, primarily due to its efficiency in long-distance power transmission and the existing infrastructure that supports it. However, as renewable energy sources become more prevalent, the need for a more adaptable and efficient grid has never been greater.
Despite the potential benefits of newer technologies, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, utilities often face significant barriers to change. Regulatory frameworks, investment priorities, and a lack of familiarity with advanced technologies can hinder progress. As a result, the grid's evolution is often slow, leaving many to question whether utilities are truly prepared for the energy demands of the future.
